After lunch, Smitty was released. Joe, Ryan, Sylvia and Smitty stood outside the hospital in the warming sunlight breaking through the dissipating coastal fog.

“We’re safe now,” Smitty said. “With the killer out of the picture, we can take our time and do our research more methodically.”

Sylvia nodded. “Thanks to Joe, we don’t have to worry about someone stealing the papers. And we can keep all this under wraps for a while.”

“Well, the police and reporters want some answers,” Dunn added. “They’ve already been told about the Shakespeare papers, so there’re bound to be more questions.”

“Yeah,” Joe added. “But now we have a perfect excuse to clam up.”

The others looked at him.

“We say we can’t discuss any of it because it’s part of a police investigation. Gives us the perfect out.”

Dunn laughed. “Your brushes with the law are turning you into quite the politician, Joe. You’ll be running for office next.”

Joe shook his head. “Me? Are you kidding? No way. Give me a classroom of eager young students. That’s my constituency.”

“Well said, lad,” Smitty chimed in, patting Joe on the shoulder.

Sylvia smiled at Joe and glanced at Dunn. “So, what’s next, Detective? What should we do?”

“Go back to your regular schedules, would be my suggestion. Give the local police time to sort things out. Joe’s family is up at Tahoe, right?” He glanced at Joe.

“Yeah. No TV or cell phone service up there and I haven’t bothered to call the cabin phone, so Sara probably doesn’t even know what’s happened. Otherwise, my cell phone would be ringing. I’ll call her from home later.”

“I know Licia’s worried, though,” said Smitty. “I’d like to get home as soon as we can, Joe.”

“Of course.”

Sylvia put her arms around Smitty and gave him a gentle hug. “Are you sure you’re all right? No blurry vision?”

“I’m fine, dear woman. Slight headache, bruised shoulder where I hit the pavement, but otherwise good as new.”

Then she hugged Joe, and with tears in her eyes said, “Thanks for taking care of this gentle man. Drive him home safely.”

“I promise,” Joe whispered in her ear. She was almost as tall as he was. Embracing her was very different from embracing Sara. “Thanks for vouching for me last night.”

“Take care of yourself, too, while you’re at it.” She released Joe and stepped back. Then she reached her hand out to Ryan Dunn. “Nice meeting you, Detective.”

They shook hands and smiled.

“The pleasure’s all mine,” Dunn said.

“What’s your next step, Ryan?” Joe asked him.

Dunn let go of Sylvia’s hand and looked at Joe and Smitty. “We need to find out who hired that guy. It’s not over until we know who he was working for. I’ll make a few calls. Have to be careful, though. This isn’t my jurisdiction.”

“What about you, Joe?” Sylvia asked.

Dunn’s cell phone rang and he stepped away from the others to answer the call.

Joe turned back to Sylvia, saying, “I have to teach tomorrow, but I think I’ll drive up to the cabin after class and spend the night with Sara and the kids.
