After lunch, Smitty was released. Joe, Ryan, Sylvia and Smitty stood outside the hospital in the warming sunlight breaking through the dissipating coastal fog.
âWeâre safe now,â Smitty said. âWith the killer out of the picture, we can take our time and do our research more methodically.â
Sylvia nodded. âThanks to Joe, we donât have to worry about someone stealing the papers. And we can keep all this under wraps for a while.â
âWell, the police and reporters want some answers,â Dunn added. âTheyâve already been told about the Shakespeare papers, so thereâre bound to be more questions.â
âYeah,â Joe added. âBut now we have a perfect excuse to clam up.â
The others looked at him.
âWe say we canât discuss any of it because itâs part of a police investigation. Gives us the perfect out.â
Dunn laughed. âYour brushes with the law are turning you into quite the politician, Joe. Youâll be running for office next.â
Joe shook his head. âMe? Are you kidding? No way. Give me a classroom of eager young students. Thatâs my constituency.â
âWell said, lad,â Smitty chimed in, patting Joe on the shoulder.
Sylvia smiled at Joe and glanced at Dunn. âSo, whatâs next, Detective? What should we do?â
âGo back to your regular schedules, would be my suggestion. Give the local police time to sort things out. Joeâs family is up at Tahoe, right?â He glanced at Joe.
âYeah. No TV or cell phone service up there and I havenât bothered to call the cabin phone, so Sara probably doesnât even know whatâs happened. Otherwise, my cell phone would be ringing. Iâll call her from home later.â
âI know Liciaâs worried, though,â said Smitty. âIâd like to get home as soon as we can, Joe.â
âOf course.â
Sylvia put her arms around Smitty and gave him a gentle hug. âAre you sure youâre all right? No blurry vision?â
âIâm fine, dear woman. Slight headache, bruised shoulder where I hit the pavement, but otherwise good as new.â
Then she hugged Joe, and with tears in her eyes said, âThanks for taking care of this gentle man. Drive him home safely.â
âI promise,â Joe whispered in her ear. She was almost as tall as he was. Embracing her was very different from embracing Sara. âThanks for vouching for me last night.â
âTake care of yourself, too, while youâre at it.â She released Joe and stepped back. Then she reached her hand out to Ryan Dunn. âNice meeting you, Detective.â
They shook hands and smiled.
âThe pleasureâs all mine,â Dunn said.
âWhatâs your next step, Ryan?â Joe asked him.
Dunn let go of Sylviaâs hand and looked at Joe and Smitty. âWe need to find out who hired that guy. Itâs not over until we know who he was working for. Iâll make a few calls. Have to be careful, though. This isnât my jurisdiction.â
âWhat about you, Joe?â Sylvia asked.
Dunnâs cell phone rang and he stepped away from the others to answer the call.
Joe turned back to Sylvia, saying, âI have to teach tomorrow, but I think Iâll drive up to the cabin after class and spend the night with Sara and the kids.
